Slats

I'm sorry, which slat issue are we talking about?

Oh, so you dont know it? I reported it at beginning but in MSFS Forum and it was noted here. Ok.

Model has slats issue (I think animation maybe is ok, because I see that slots can hide completely in 3D model) but during the flight the slats are always extended, regardless of their position, more or less but they are open always. In real life, the position of the slats depends on the Angle of Attack during the flight (so also of the airplane speed and wind too), when AoA is close to zero or negative (straight flight or descending), the slots do not deflect at all and are exactly on the wing line. This is not possible in the model and in the MSFS environment, so something has been implemented wrong.

3D model - is possible:

Real life (from 7:22):

The model in MSFS:

This is dive, so they should be completely hidden, they should have the precise line of the wing. Unfortunately, something is badly encoded and they do not hide completely, although as you can see in the first picture, it is possible in the 3D model.

It also is possible to completly retract the slats in flight. It is dependant on your AOA as it is in the real aircraft.

Maybe you have dev version 😄. Its impossible on my 1.0.1, see this:

direct straight flight, speed 270km/h, AoA = 0

AoA = minus, dive, speed 340km/h

still the pressure does not hide the slats

I am not sure if there is an interim position. They are supposed to extend above a certain AOA and snap back into Up position as soon as you're below it.

Operation of those is really light, you can push them in with a thumb on the ground. Some pilots of the 109 report to even hear a distinct "Clonk" when they extend or retract.

Nope, not a dev version. I`m using the live 1.0.1 version 🙂

As Marko said, its operation is really light, it's hard to achive but definitely possible.

  • 4 weeks later...

Guys, after near one month of flying - I never noticed that slats can be closed. It's a really simple design, with increasing AoA they open, otherwise they are closed, especially in dive. They've never been closed here. I think it's worth improving. Something is wrong with the animation or code. Pls to add for list of issues.

It turns out that no one is right, the slats are unfortunately badly made in the model in the whole line.

Bf-108 uses Handley-Page (Lachmann) type of slats so they dont work like in most airplane!

Slats in Bf-108 are ALWAYS closed over 130 km/h, below are just beginning to open. In this case, they do not depend on AoA (strange but its true), but on the speed of the aircraft and even act as a speed indicator. Exactly at 130 km / h they open only, before they have to be on the wing line.

You can use translate Google: https://www.flugrevue.de/klassiker/die-aelteste-fliegende-taifun-bf-108-taifun-in-traditionsfarben/

This means that in every screenshot I've made, they should just be closed, and they didn't.

At around 130 km/h, the Handley Page slats retract automatically without making a noise and without any noticeable change in flight behavior due to the air pressure. The control is well harmonized and direct in response

Manual of Nord 1002:

So pls fix it, above those speed they should be closed, not like now.

Why we can have too very short time for edit 😕 here.

The model:

speed .... 250 km/h, straight flight, AoA=0:

Impossible to have slats in this postion IRL, so this part is buggy. They should be on the wingline above 130 km/h for example as it was above.

Heya once again YoYo 😄

I know you are very adamant about this being wrong in our model, but I unfortunately have to disagree there. All the materials you presented here are contradicting themselves at different parts. In the video at 4:50 they have a slide that says it opens automatically with AOA. Same with the picture in the next post; in the second paragraph it says "which relates to angle of attack only"

We spoke to several owners of BF108s and they all said they aren't generally closed above 130km/h.

And to what Marko said earlier; they don't drop out instantly. You'd have to have a very violent change in AOA handling for that to happen; which physically is impossible.

I thik this state about rela Bf-108 is very clear:

"Because the 108 designers around Willy Messerschmitt took over the automatic slat from Handley-Page (Lachmann). And from a speed of 130 km/h, these begin to leave their position on the leading edge of the wing and stretch forward. This is done with such precision and predictability that the narrow surfaces not only function as a buoyancy aid, but also as a replacement for the airspeed indicator."

But apart from that, the big problem is simply that they don't hide at all.

Request from my side: if they are retracting give me the rate of descent or ascent and airspeed when the slats are fully retracted and are on 100% the wing line, I will reproduce this in my MSFS. Unfortunately, I never noticed that the slats were hidden, they always stick out, this is general problem here for me :).
