I'm having trouble with the HUD not displaying and the emergency escape device deploying automatically after the gate has stopped and the engine and APU are cut off and the external power is connected.

Did you adjust the brightness of the HUD? You cannot see anything on default position, you need to increase it a bit to start to see something.

For the slides, this is the first time I am seeing them in any simulation.
