Questions About the A380 Reduced Texture Pack and Custom Liveries

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions regarding the A380 Reduced Texture Pack and how it interacts with third-party liveries. I would appreciate it if someone could clarify how the texture resolution and fallback behavior work.

1. Why are some textures in the standard package smaller than those in the Reduced Texture Pack?

I checked the texture files under Packages/Official2024/.../iniBuilds/liveries and noticed that some files, particularly those with names containing KTX2, appear to be significantly smaller in file size than their counterparts in the Reduced Texture Pack.

Ktx2 from official package:

Ktx2 from reduces texturas package:

I would have expected the Reduced Texture Pack to contain smaller texture files than the standard package. Why is the opposite true for some of these files? Is this due to differences in texture formats, compression, mipmaps, or some other factor?

2. What happens when I use the Reduced Texture Pack alongside a third-party livery?

Suppose I install the Reduced Texture Pack and then install a community-made livery that replaces only some of the aircraft’s textures.

For the textures that are not included in the community livery, will the aircraft use the reduced-resolution textures from the Reduced Texture Pack, or will those textures revert to the original, full-resolution versions from the standard package?

In other words, does the Reduced Texture Pack continue to apply to all textures not explicitly replaced by the third-party livery?

3. What happens when a custom livery does not include every texture?

I am also creating my own livery. Obviously, it would be impractical to repaint every single aircraft component, so I have only modified the Base Color textures (the relevant *_ALBD files) for the most visually prominent areas.

My livery package does not include the remaining, unmodified textures. In this case, which textures or attachments will the aircraft use for those components: the reduced-resolution textures from the Reduced Texture Pack or the original full-resolution textures from the standard package?

I would like to understand the fallback behavior before publishing my livery, so that I can ensure compatibility with users who have installed the Reduced Texture Pack.

Thanks in advance for your help!
