I am retired after a 30 year career with 15 of those years as a 747 Captain.  I never ever saw  a plane with an engine inlet cover, ever let alone have to remove any of that stuff on a walk around. Sure we are supposed to make sure everything is ready to go but not our jobs  to get a cherry picker to remove pita and engine covers.    Would't bother me except I can't remove them when at the gate and have to start with the engines running on the runway.  It's non functional and a regressive step.   These planes fly 12 hours a day and are just between flights.
