GPWS Test Partially Functional

Featured Replies

I've noticed the GPWS test can only be initiated from the FO's G/S switch, and even then, there is no sound and the test is incomplete - the G/S light merely illuminates red and stays illuminated for as long as the switch is pressed.

Pressing the captain's G/S switch does nothing.

I think this was fixed in 1.0.2, could you check again please?

Just checked and it appears functional! It does differ from what the manual I have says should happen at each stage of the GPWS test, are there different software/hardware configurations that could change the behavior of the GPWS test? My manual is from 2009 if that helps.

It seems as though there are two GPWS tests that can be performed by flight crews - one test comes after a momentary press of the GPWS G/S switch and should generate the following warning sequence:

  • GPWS FAULT Light illuminates
  • G/S Lights illuminate
  • "GLIDESLOPE" aural warning
  • G/S Lights extinguish
  • GPWS Lights illuminate
  • "WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP" aural warning
  • "TERRAIN TERRAIN, WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP" aural warning
  • GPWS Lights extinguish
  • GPWS FAULT Light extinguishes

Then if you hold the G/S switch for more than 5 seconds, it does a more comprehensive test and should generate the following sequence:

  • GPWS FAULT Light illuminates
  • G/S LIGHT illuminates
  • Aural warnings in order:
    • "SINK RATE"
    • "WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP"
    • "TERRAIN"
    • "WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP"
    • "DON'T SINK"
    • "DON'T SINK"
    • "TOO LOW-TERRAIN"
    • "TOO LOW-GEAR"
    • "TOO LOW-FLAPS"
    • "TOO LOW-TERRAIN"
    • "GLIDESLOPE"
    • "BANK ANGLE"
    • "BANK ANGLE"
    • "MINIMUMS"
    • "MINIMUMS"
    • "TOO LOW TERRAIN"
    • "CAUTION TERRAIN"
    • "CAUTION TERRAIN"
    • "TERRAIN TERRAIN, WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP"
    • "CAUTION OBSTACLE"
    • "CAUTION OBSTACLE"
    • "OBSTACLE"
    • "OBSTACLE"
    • "WHOOP WHOOP, PULL UP"
  • G/S Light extinguishes
  • GPWS Light illuminates
  • GPWS Light extinguishes
  • GPWS FAULT Light extinguishes

As of now in the sim, a momentary press generates:

  • G/S Light illuminates
  • G/S Light extinguishes
  • GPWS Light illuminates
  • GPWS Light extinguishes
  • "DON'T SINK" aural warning x3
  • "GLIDESLOPE" aural warning x2
  • "OBSTACLE AHEAD" aural warning x3
  • "PULL UP" aural warning x2
  • "SINK RATE" aural warning x2
  • "OBSTACLE AHEAD" aural warning x3
  • "TOO LOW FLAPS" aural warning x2
  • "TOO LOW GEAR" aural warning x2
  • "TOO LOW TERRAIN" aural warning x3
  • "TERRAIN" aural warning x3

A long press in the sim generates:

  • G/S Light illuminates
  • "GLIDE SLOPE" aural warning x3
  • G/S Light extinguishes
  • GPWS Light illuminates
  • "PULL UP" aural warning x2
  • GPWS Light extinguishes

Again I'm not sure if there's a software difference at play here or what. Appreciate you taking the time to look at this!

Here's an except from a manual from 1997 detailing a different GPWS test procedure:image.thumb.png.213ae2bd9f4fcd1ad2886936257e667e.png

So it appears there are at least some variations in the GPWS system
