Googling and searching showed very little on this question...

I often (always??) get this showing on the FMC at some stage. What is its meaning/significance?

Hi Martin,

This indicates that the aircraft GPS is being used on it's own without support from ground stations relaying the signal. See FCOM details below for more info!
